The IACUC application is completed and submitted online using the RIO site listed above. All IACUC applications must meet criteria for scientific merit, training of named personnel, mandatory health screening documents completed by all personnel and have in place other required approvals.

This MHS survey needs to be completed before animals can be handled. The survey can be found at the RIO site.

The IACUC conducts regular inspections of laboratories that hold IACUC approvals. These inspections may be announced or unannounced. Inspections will cover all aspects of compliance, including search for expired materials in the laboratory, inspection of trash containers to assure that biological and sharps waste are being handled correctly, records and notebooks to assure that monitoring requirements are being followed.

All personnel who perform procedures on animals are required to take a series of online training courses and attend courses offered by LARC that pertain to the species of animals used and the procedures that the investigator will perform.  Relevant IACUC Training requirements are listed here.

• BRER I: Basic Regulatory and Ethical Requirement. Online course required for all individuals named on IACUC protocols. This training must be repeated every 3 yrs.
• BRER II: Online course required for all individuals who perform anesthesia and recovery from anesthesia or surgery on animals. This training must be repeated every 3 yrs.

Species specific training course: This series of courses covers common procedures and animal handling techniques for each animal species. It is required that all researchers who work with animals will complete the course relevant to the particular animal species in the IACUC protocol before they are permitted to initiate work.

• RIO: The Research Information Online (referred to as RIO) is a comprehensive database management system that will link and store your research protocols, authorized users, online training programs and pertinent data. The goal of RIO is to facilitate quick turnaround times on complex processes and provide data integrity.
