New and Established Investigator Department Awards
- Award amount $5,000.
- The goal of the NOVA is to supply pilot funds for a larger grant submission to the UCSF/RAP program (30-50K) and for OREF specialty society grants.
- Priority will be given to new investigators with a new idea/project.
- Award amount $5,000
- The goal of the CC&E NOVA is to foster fundamental and applied research on topics related to advancing and sustaining opportunity for all. Many opportunities exist to conduct clinical research that may pertain to topics such as development of advanced methods to quantify and mitigate healthcare disparities for persons with MSK disorders. This award is aimed to promote this field of research within our department and to cultivate future large-scale grants for investigators studying topics which are commited to UCSF PRIDE values.
- All Orthopaedic faculty are eligible to apply for the grant which is to be used in a 1-year period.
- Award amount $10,000
- For a continuation of a NOVA project or other junior investigator project.
- Priority will be given to new investigators who have been awarded a NOVA award and continue to progress their research but need additional funding.
- Award amount $25,000
- Provides established (NOVA, OREF, NIH, RAP, or foundation grant awardees) with seed funding to perform a new project. The funding will be directed towards preliminary data that can support the submission of a larger, sustainable grant.
- Priority will be given to research projects focused on translational, collaborative research.
- Award amount $33,333
- Designed to provide temporary (up to 12 months) and partial support during continuing efforts to obtain full extramural funding.
- Priority will be given to two groups of faculty members:
- established (associate and full rank) faculty with experienced research teams that are threatened with disruption due to fiscal challenges and
- new (assistant rank) investigators with one or more rounds of well-scored but unfunded federal applications and who are within one year of exhausting their startup funds.
- Award amount $5,000 in HPC Services
- Services may consist of data collection with existing HPC capabilities in biomechanics, exercise physiology, functional testing, or some combination.
- Grant funds will cover data collection services only.
- Proposals with novel ideas as well as proposals that are an add-on to a current research study will be considered if the goal is to acquire pilot data for possible future funding.
- All UCSF faculty may apply for the funds; junior faculty are particularly encouraged to apply. However, staff and trainees (Postdocs, PhD students, Residents, Fellows, and SRAs) may also apply but only with a UCSF faculty mentor acting as a Co-PI or PI on the project.

- Award amount $5,000 are open to residents who have applied for but have not obtained peer-reviewed research funding.
- For residents who did not recieve OREF grants in the past cycle, this is a great mechanism to resubmit for funding.

NOVA/DEI-NOVA/Super NOVA
- The Research Committee welcomes and encourages applications from early-career investigators (at the level Assistant Professor) and from first-time applicants
- Prepare a 2-page (not including references) grant application with one-page for specific aims and five-pages for the research plan.
- Include a one-page budget and one-page budget justification.
- Include an NIH Biosketch for applicant and other Co-Investigator. Co-Investigators can include residents and postdocs.
- Follow either OREF grant format or RAP guidelines/samples.
- Review successful NOVA applications here.
Seed
- Prepare a 6-page (not including references) grant application with one-page for specific aims and five-pages for the research plan.
- Include a one-page budget and one-page budget justification.
- Follow RAP guidelines/samples.
- Submit an NIH biosketch of the PI and co-investigators.
- IRB/Animal research approval or submission prior to submission of the grant is encouraged.
- Review successful SEED applications here.
Bridge
- Follow SOM Bridge funding format.
- Submit a four-page NIH biosketch of the PI and co-investigators, specific aims page, and a research plan no longer than six-pages, not including references.
- Include a concise description including the applicant’s research program, financial needs, including a brief statement of eligibility (e.g. In August 2016, I had $500k to support my research, but on August 1, 2017, I will have only $200k, representing a 60% loss) and a detailed description of how any discretionary funds will be used. Provide attempts to re-establish funding. Include detailed description of the adverse impact of the current/impending funding shortfall on the applicant’s research program and research personnel.
- A specific plan for re-establishing funding during the bridge year (e.g., grant agency, submission date), including how reviewer comments are, or will be, addressed in pending and future grant applications. The letter should also state that bridge funds will be relinquished as soon as additional funding is secured.
- IRB/Animal research approval or submission prior to submission of the grant is encouraged.
- The previous submission, comments, and revision letter if appropriate should be submitted as well.

- Your proposal content (up to 7 pages) should clearly and thoroughly describe the project’s aims, previous work, background, methods, significance, and budget. Put the project title and principal investigator’s name at the top of the first page. Your proposal should contain the following sections, clearly indicated. Please respect the indicated page limits.
