How the Research Committee can support your research

The UCSF Orthopaedic Surgery Research Committee actively participates in advancing the research goals of the department by evaluating proposed projects to ensure consistency with the departments mission. This committee consists of dedicated and experienced researchers that help develop department policies and research goals with the best interests of the department in mind and are available to collaborate and offer expert grant review to all levels of researchers within the department.

New and Established Investigator Department Awards

Application/Submission Process
  • Include title page with name and applicable grant (attach as a single PDF file)

NOVA/DEI-NOVA/Super NOVA

  • Prepare a 6-page (not including references) grant application with one-page for specific aims and five-pages for the research plan.
  • Include a one-page budget and one-page budget justification.
  • Include an NIH Biosketch for applicant and any key collaborators
  • Follow either OREF grant format or RAP guidelines/samples.
  • Review successful NOVA applications here.

Seed

  • Prepare a 6-page (not including references) grant application with one-page for specific aims and five-pages for the research plan.
  • Include a one-page budget and one-page budget justification.
  • Follow RAP guidelines/samples.
  • Submit an NIH biosketch of the PI and co-investigators.
  • IRB/Animal research approval or submission prior to submission of the grant is encouraged.
  • Review successful SEED applications here.

Bridge

  • Follow SOM Bridge funding format.
  • Submit a four-page NIH biosketch of the PI and co-investigators, specific aims page, and a research plan no longer than six-pages, not including references.
  • Include a concise description including the applicant’s research program, financial needs, including a brief statement of eligibility (e.g. In August 2016, I had $500k to support my research, but on August 1, 2017, I will have only $200k, representing a 60% loss) and a detailed description of how any discretionary funds will be used. Provide attempts to re-establish funding. Include detailed description of the adverse impact of the current/impending funding shortfall on the applicant’s research program and research personnel.
  • A specific plan for re-establishing funding during the bridge year (e.g., grant agency, submission date), including how reviewer comments are, or will be, addressed in pending and future grant applications. The letter should also state that bridge funds will be relinquished as soon as additional funding is secured.
  • IRB/Animal research approval or submission prior to submission of the grant is encouraged.
  • The previous submission, comments, and revision letter if appropriate should be submitted as well.

Human Performance Center (HPC)

  • Follow HPC format here.
  • Your proposal content (up to 7 pages) should clearly and thoroughly describe the project’s aims, previous work, background, methods, significance, and budget. Put the project title and principal investigator’s name at the top of the first page. Your proposal should contain the following sections, clearly indicated. Please respect the indicated page limits. 

James O. Johnston (JOJ) Resident Research Grants

  • Submit a full 6 page proposal (including 1 specific aims page) along with budget (OREF grant format).
