Human Subjects
Utilizing Human Subjects in Your Research

Prior to performing research with human subjects, researchers should review the information at the Committee on Human Research website. Particular attention should be paid to the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) guidance regarding protection of Personal Health Information (PHI) for human research subjects.

Research studies involving human subjects are required to obtain approval from the Committee on Human Research (CHR), the Institutional Review Board at UCSF, before research is initiated. In addition to CHR approval, other approvals/authorizations or certifications by the UCSF Cancer Center, Radiation Safety Committee, FDA, etc may be required. Consult with the CHR staff to determine which approvals are mandatory for your study.  Also review the Human Research Protection Training available through the Clinical Research Resource HUB.
